Proust Goes Tech With John Doherty, Founder and CEO of Credo

John Doherty, as the founder of Credo, connects (competent) digital marketers to businesses who need them. And while he may say yes to interviews with yours truly, his startup doesn’t say yes to marketers nearly as often. In fact, Credo rejects over a third of the marketers who try to get in.

But while he’s not swatting away marketers from clogging up his platform, Doherty recently moved to Denver, where life is cheaper and the mountains to climb are steeper. Through Proust, let’s find out more about the newly-minted mountain man.

What would you otherwise be doing right now?

I would probably still own my own company, and I would probably have a content or media company in the outdoor/journalism sports world.

Your main fault?

I’m a people pleaser. I say yes too much.

The quality you most desire in a tweet?

I enjoy bite-sized insightfulness.

Your idea of misery

Being insanely cold and being able to do nothing about it.

What do you appreciate the most in your friends?

I appreciate loyalty and availability.

Your chief characteristic

Driven.

What skill do you wish you possessed?

I wish I knew how to code better.

Your most impactful book?

The Millionaire Next Door.

What defines success?

Success is being able to do what you want to do when you want to do it.

When is confidence lost?

When I haven’t had coffee, and I am hungover.

What virtues do others have that you don’t?

Patience. It’s [a virtue] I’m trying to cultivate in my life.

What impact do you want to leave behind?

I want people to say that “John really cared about other people.”

What’s the biggest problem tech is failing to solve?

My snarky answer is tech hasn’t figured out how to make us live forever yet (but I know Peter Thiel is working on that one). But honestly, autonomous transportation. I am surprised we are not further along yet. It’s crazy to me that the NYC subway still has people driving it and controlling breaking and all that.
