Salesforce Acquires Attic Labs, Startup Will Join Quip Team After Raising $8M+

Attic Labs has announced it has been acquired by Salesforce. The startup, which raised an $8.1 million Series A from Greylock Partners and Harrison Metal, is the creator of Noms, a decentralized database that focuses on collaboration. The founding team was known for its work on the Greasemonkey plugin for Firefox, according to TechCrunch.

Attic Labs is Salesforce’s first known acquisition of the year. Regarding the deal, Salesforce directed Crunchbase News to Attic’s statement when asked specific questions.

Since terms of the deal were not disclosed, it is notable that the company did not go onto raise a Series B round. It has been nearly 18 months months since Attic Labs raised its Series A round, with little on its ability to monetize available publicly.

The team will, according to a statement on its homepage, be a part of the Quip team, a document collaboration platform Salesforce acquired in August 2016 for $750 million, according to Crunchbase. Salesforce Ventures was an investor in Quip.

Attic Labs claims the software powering their database will remain open source; however, the company told developers in a Google Forum post that it has “no immediate plans for additional work.” Instead, the technology will be used as a part of Quip’s collaboration platform to improve its “ability to connect live data sources, making it easier for people to collaborate faster and more effectively.”

Salesforce has a history of acquiring open source companies. According to Crunchbase, the world’s largest CRM software company has acquired PredictionIO, GoInstant, and Dimdim in the category. An acquisition price was not disclosed in those deals.
